Golf Construction Managr

The Golf Construction Manager assists the Director of Golf in the planning, budget, coordinating and supervising of employees and contractors engaged in maintaining and enhancing golf and turf conditions at various golf facilities.  The Golf Construction Manager will assist in the physical “shaping” of golf course “hole” layout playability including tees, fairways, sand traps, greens and drainage projects.  Works closely with outside contractors to assure that workmanship, budgets, and deadlines are efficient, effective and to the highest quality.

 Essential Functions:

 

  1. Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
  2. Assists the Director of Golf in planning and coordinating operations and maintenance of Park District golf courses construction projects.  Develops and recommends plans for future golf course improvements and facilities, interfacing with the Department of Planning and Design & Natural Resources.
  3. Implements guidelines for Park District golf courses goals and policies, working closely with the Director of Golf.
  4. Interacts with the Chief of Marketing and the Director of Golf to assure that the short and long-range plans for the Golf Division are properly communicated to our golfers, and their solicited input is properly channeled for consideration.
  5. Evaluates Golf Department maintenance/turf operations, in relation to course construction, reconstruction/irrigation and in consultation with the Director of Golf.  Initiates steps that will improve levels of maintenance efficiency and player quality.
  6. Coordinates with the Golf Department and Park District personnel in planning and developing golf projects and improvements.
  7. Works closely with Clubhouse Manager/Professional and Golf Course Manager, to keep them informed while performing enhancement projects at respective facilities.
  8. Assists with the management of operating and capital budgets for the golf courses.  Purchases materials and services in accordance with District guidelines and policies.
  9. Effectively supervises assigned employees through planning, organizing and prioritizing work assignments.  Effectively communicates and instills teamwork among assigned employees through staff meetings, written communications and scheduled work review sessions.
  10. Conveys and instills a solid philosophy of golf park and conservation services to District personnel and park visitors.
  11. Assists the Director of Golf/Turf by coordinating and assuming special project assignments.
  12. Assures the proper preparation of Personnel records for submission to the Payroll Manager; accomplishes performance evaluation of personnel within his/her crew.
  13. Provides public information in response to inquiries with respect to the golf courses.
  14. Performs duties in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment.  Responds to hazardous situations/potentially unsafe conditions and notifies supervisor.
  15. Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  16. Updates and enhances own knowledge by involvement in continuing education for professional growth (i.e., attends relevant conferences, seminars, in-service trainings, and certification programs)
  17. Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.

 Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in agronomy, turf grass science, turf management, related field or equivalent preferred.  Minimum of two years of experience providing administrative support. Three to five years of increasingly responsible management experience in golf course construction, golf turf management, and golf course “shaping” of which two years have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, public officials and other Park District personnel, and the public.
  • Proficient golfer with a working understanding of the sport and rules of golf.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and effectively manage a diversity of program services, park operations, maintenance, construction and natural resource management.
  • Possess Class A Golf Course Superintendents Card, preferably certified superintendent.
  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit leadership to professional, clerical and maintenance personnel in a manner that builds teamwork and recognizes contributions of employees.
  • Understands the workings of golf course irrigation and pumping systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the installation of drainage and irrigation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment, i.e., backhoe; bull dozer and trenching machines, skid steer, track loader, excavators, tractors, roller and dump trucks as necessary for project completion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of assorted aggregates and construction materials.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of golf course architecture and ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to estimate quantities and cost of materials needed for each project accurately (i.e., soil, aggregate, sand irrigation pipe/fittings and drainage pipe along with related supplies.
  • Proficient in the use of and set-up of laser guided equipment and the use of lasers/levels to set grades, pipes and percentage of slope.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs.
  • Mature professional attitude and considerable discretion, including ability to manage confidential information.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.

Salary:  Commensurate with education and experience
