Chapter Overview

 

The First Tee of Utah is a chapter of The First Tee, an international non-profit youth development and education organization The First Tee was created in 1997 by leaders in American golf to provide young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to learn character values and life skills though the game of golf.

 

The First Tee of Utah has been in operation since 2011 and is in a growth mode. We currently have programs in Logan, Salt Lake County, Park City, Tooele and St. George. We have three main programs: 1) an elementary program that provides golf and character values curriculum for elementary school PE classes, 2) an after school program that provides activity-based golf and character values learning for schools, community centers and youth clubs, and 3) our flagship, a golf course program that provides full golf instruction, character values instruction and life skills instruction. We also offer or are developing coached practice, playing and competition opportunities for our youth participants, depending on location.

 

Job Summary

 

The Program Director provides leadership for, and is generally responsible for, program delivery throughout the statewide Utah chapter. This is mainly accomplished by assuring the success of our team of coaches, who in turn assure the success of the program participants. The Program Director 1) provides training, support and guidance for program locations and program partners, with emphasis on the coaches; 2) teaches or assists with programs as needed; and 3) leads program delivery for chapter-delivered program locations; and 4) performs program record keeping and reporting.

 

Position may be full-time or part-time (see below). Hours are flexible and sometimes unconventional. Reports to the Executive Director. No benefits. References required. Must pass a criminal background check. Pay based on The First Tee training level (training available after hire), and golf professional association status.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities Include

 

Program Delivery and Support

 

  • Recruit, train, engage, retain and progress the program coaches. Work with the coaches to assure their success.

  • Assist program locations (golf courses) and program partners (elementary schools and community centers) in successfully operating their programs and meeting their specific challenges and needs, paying particular attention to assuring:

    • The safety of program participants, parents, coaches and volunteers;

    • All programs are conducted according to guidelines from The First Tee;

    • Coaches are properly trained with completed background checks;

    • Proper equipment is on hand and in good repair;

    • Participant registration is coordinated with the chapter and national offices;

  • Prepare and present, or assist program locations in preparing and presenting, program orientations for program participants and parents.

  • Assist program participants in applying for The First Tee participant opportunities.

  • Assist program partners as needed in the preparation and delivery of their programs. Monitor and assure they have proper training and equipment.

  • Develop transition opportunities for elementary school and after-school participants to enroll in the golf course programs.

  • Develop a volunteer support system to ensure retention and recognition, and maintain proper student/coach ratios.

  • Successfully complete Coach Training and Program Director Training, becoming proficient in the content, delivery and administration of The First Tee programming.

 

Program Teaching

 

  • Assist program locations or program partners in preparing and teaching classes.

  • Lead the preparation and teaching of programs at chapter-delivered locations.

 

Record Keeping and Reporting

 

  • Maintain and submit accurate records of program locations, program partners, participants, coaches, volunteers, clinics and classes. Maintain program webpages.

 

Miscellaneous

 

  • Honorably represent the Chapter and its values in community interactions.

  • Assist as instructed by Executive Director with fundraising, marketing and events.

  • Attend monthly Board meetings and weekly staff meetings.

  • Assist in developing and adhering to program and operating budgets.

  • Travel as necessary to receive training, attend regional and national The First Tee meetings, and visit program locations and program partner sites.

  • Other duties as directed by the Executive Director.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Love for youth ages 7 to 17, with a commitment to help them improve their lives.

  • Maturity and ability to build collegial relationships with golf and education leaders.

  • Superb organization skills. The ability to work quickly and effectively in a complex environment requiring control of several details at once.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.

  • Charismatic, personable and motivational in working with young people ages 7 to 17 and with adult coaches and volunteers.

  • Experience coaching, teaching and/or mentoring young people ages 7 to 17.

  • Experience recruiting, training and managing coaches and volunteers.

  • Bachelor’s Degree, with preference for a degree in education, sports administration, business, recreation, psychology, or communication.

  • A member or enrolled apprentice in the PGA of America or LPGA, or willingness and ability to become such.

  • Experience in the golf profession, with preference for experience teaching golf to young people ages 7 to 17.

  • Standard computer skills, with emphasis on the Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive. Ability to learn online database programs. Preference given for graphic design, photo and/or video production skills.

  • Able to travel frequently throughout Utah, and to occasional meetings nationally.

 

This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to lift 50 pounds.

 

Depending on the qualifications, experience and desires of the candidate, The First Tee of Utah will consider this as either a part-time or a full-time position. If the position is offered as full-time, other responsibilities in the management of the chapter may be included, such as program development, fundraising support, donor cultivation and stewardship, and/or event management and execution.

 

Preference will be given to members or enrolled apprentices of the PGA of America or LPGA, and to members in good standing and active in the Utah Section of the PGA.
