JOB OVERVIEW:

The Director of Instruction is responsible for organizing, budgeting, developing, promoting, scheduling and conducting golf instructional programs that meet member and guest needs.   The Director is responsible for growing annual revenues & profits while making Boar’s Head Golf Academy the best instructional academy in Central Virginia.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work 80% of the time outdoors on/in Birdwood’s practice facilities, Boar’s Head Swing Studio, UVA Golf

Performance Center, BH all-purpose gym and/or on course teaching golf.  Work 20% of the time indoors (approximately

10% Academy administration & promotions & ~10% assisting w/ groups, special events & daily shop operations).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Manage, oversee & direct the total golf instruction & player development programming for Boar’s Head Resort

 

  • Manage all aspects of the instructional budget; exceeding annual academy revenue, expense & profit goals

 

  • Administer, approve and accurately report weekly academy revenues and commissions for all professionals

 

  • Create, design, implement and teach all instructional programs

 

  • Create short & long term strategies to engage the Resort’s key market segments:  BHSC & BW Members, overnight hotel guests, juniors, UVA students, UVA faculty/staff and surrounding area residents

 

  • Create player development programs to foster both recreational/fun & competitive environments as appropriate for each of Boar’s Head Resort’s varied market segments

 

  • Create and conduct Resort Stay & Learn Packages, Resort Golf Schools, Member Clinics, Junior Camps, Adult & Junior Clinics, Junior Academies, High School Camps, UVA Student/Staff Clinics, Junior League Teams, etc.

 

  • Partner with Boar’s Head Marketing, Director of Sports & Wellness and the Director of Golf to effectively promote all instructional programming

 

  • Oversee all lesson & program scheduling; maximizing utilization of all available golf training facilities

 

  • Train other facility golf professionals on the academy’s overarching teaching philosophies and methodology

 

  • Utilize state-of-the-art learning theories; integrate appropriate use of teaching aids, videos & launch monitors

 

  • Attend all property and departmental meetings and attend & assist with all tournaments, social & special events

 

  • Assist w/ upkeep of Birdwood’s practice facilities to ensure safe, clean & professional conditions at all times

 

  • Maintain teaching aids, loaner clubs, and instructional equipment and storage areas in excellent condition

 

  • Represent the facility & academy in community service initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and media events

 

  • Assist Director of Golf & golf professionals in developing and enforcing all facility rules, policies and procedures

 

  • Provide consistently high standards for all member & guest service interactions; meeting all Forbes guidelines

 

  • Utilize social media and write newsletter articles to help promote ongoing programs and events

 

  • Partner with Sports Club and Spa Managers to cross promote all activities and programs

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Essential:

  • PGA and/or LPGA Class A Member in good standing
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in teaching golf
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in overseeing all golf instructional programs at a facility
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office, Golf Genius and GHIN software
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively in both verbal and written formats
  • Proficient in each of the following: teaching, using technology, club fitting, practice facility management
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, early mornings and evenings
  • Proven ability to:
  • Work well and positively with management and colleagues within a team environment while having the ability to work independently when required
  • Develop strong and positive relationships with all members, key stakeholders, and golf community
  • Exhibit efficient time management skills and prioritize tasks
  • Resolve problems calmly and professionally, using good judgment and strong interpersonal skills
  • Understand member and guest service needs and provide anticipatory service

 

Desirable:

  • Experience operating Trackman and SAM Putt Lab or similar
  • 4 year college degree or equivalent
  • PGA and golf industry certifications
  •        Experience managing Golf POS, Schedulers and Tee Time Management systems

Director of Instruction Compensation

Base Salary                         $45,000-$50,000

Commissions/Bonus       $2,500-$5,000

Lessons at 75%                  $35,000-$45,000               

Total Comp                         $82,500-$100,000
