Position Title:                        Director of Golf

Reporting Relationship:      Senior Director of Golf and General Manager/Chief Operating Officer

Primary Purpose:     Responsible for the day to day operations of Leatherstocking Golf Course, including managing golf operations, the Subscriber program, instruction program, merchandise, and the Leatherstocking budget, all in cooperation with golf maintenance and the other Otesaga departments—all at a profit and in an environment of exceptional customer service.

 The long time Senior Director of Golf at Leatherstocking will be retiring at the end of the 2019 season and the new Director of Golf will work closely with him during the 2019 season before assuming all of the duties and responsibilities in the Fall of 2019 (based on their performance).

Experience Required:  PGA and/or LPGA Member with ten years of experience in management roles at resort or daily fee golf courses with a membership component. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Golf Operations--day to day management of tee times, golf carts and driving range

  • Supervision of golf operations staff (both in the Pro Shop and outside) including hiring, customer service training, scheduling, assigning duties
  • Provide excellent customer service for hotel guests, Subscribers, outing groups and daily fee golfers
  • Develop and enforce all Club Rules and Regulations
  • Supervision of golfers teeing off on time and their play on the course
  • Sell and coordinate Golf Outings maximizing tee times for greatest revenue
  • Coordination of cart fleet including managing lease and service repairs and cleanliness
  • Oversee and enforce all golf shop operations policies, procedures, controls, and fee structures to ensure the safekeeping of assets, inventory and resources
  • Coordination of Point of Sale System and On-line Tee Time system
  • Manage tee times on an on-going basis to maximize revenues
  • Provide coverage at Pro Shop as needed and during off season
  • Coordination of use of off-site driving range and transportation for guests

Golf Course Maintenance--Daily coordination with Golf Course Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent

  • Ride the course on a daily basis to make certain that Maintenance Standards are being met as well as monitor play

Subscriber (Membership) Program—provide administration and coordination of Subscriber program including their use of the golf course, on-going communication, Subscriber billings etc.

  • Develop and administer all Subscriber Tournaments and Social events
  • Recruit, provide tours, follow up with prospects and sell new Subscribers on an ongoing basis
  • Coordinate Subscriber Advisory Committee (if developed) and follow up actions
  • Coordinate Junior Subscriber program including Rules, Etiquette, Clinics, Play Days and Tournaments

Merchandise—purchase and display merchandise including clothing, balls and accessories that will generate the greatest revenue

  • Provide ongoing merchandise promotions to encourage sales
  • Develop monthly inventory report (including cost of sales) and monitor inventory needs on a regular basis

Instruction—develop and implement instruction program for you and other PGA Assistant Pros for hotel guests, Subscribers and the public

  • Provide and administer the latest technology available for golf instruction
  • Develop and administer all “Growth of Game” initiatives for adults and kids including Get Ready Golf, PGA Junior League, LPGA/USGA Girls Golf, First Tee etc.
  • Coordinate all activities of the Leatherstocking Golf Academy if and when it becomes a reality
  • Coordinate golf instruction with the Clark Sports Center

Sales and Marketing—coordination with Otesaga Sales and Marketing team to attract hotel golfers, Subscribers, outings and daily fee golfers including advising on fee schedules, advertising, promotions, collateral, direct mail, social media etc.

  • Coordinate managing email database programs on an on-going basis
  • Actively solicit golf outings from businesses, organizations, civic and social groups
  • Coordinate and administer Golf Leagues and similar programs to generate revenue
  • Coordination with the PGA, CMAA, NGCOA and other groups promoting golf
  • Coordination with Baseball Hall of Fame
  • Serve as the Golf Ambassador for the Baseball Hall of Fame Members and their guests throughout the year and especially during Hall of Fame induction week

Food and Beverage—coordination with Leatherstocking Grille on a daily basis to ensure quality food and service for the customers

  • Coordination of Food and Beverage for Subscriber Tournaments and Social events and Outings

Budget, Payroll and Accounting—responsible for the financial and performance of the golf operations and coordination with accounting including daily financial reports

  • Responsible for developing and meeting revenue budget and staying within expense budget
  • Coordination of payroll and oversee and approve all accounts payables

Housekeeping--responsible for the cleanliness of the Club including interior and exterior

  • Daily coordination with housekeeping department

Other—conduct weekly staff meetings with key Leatherstocking staff and participate with Otesaga staff meetings

  • Play golf with guests, Subscribers, group prospects, Hall of Famers and others as requested
  • Coordinate course usage for high schools, colleges, NYSGA and other outside tournaments
  • Coordinate post Labor Day Hall of Fame fundraiser
  • Respond to emergency situations including at times when the course is closed
  • Enforce all Rules and Regulations governing golf course usage to ensure safety and security of customers, employees and assets
  • Develop and coordinate the NYSGA/USGA handicaps
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary and requested by General Manager/Chief Operating Officer

Knowledge and Skills Required:

 Complete knowledge of management of golf operations

  • Complete knowledge of the Rules of Golf
  • Full understanding of golf course maintenance
  • Knowledge of operating standards for an excellent golf operation
  • Ability to effectively teach golf to all levels of players
  • Knowledge of golf merchandise and equipment and merchandise displays
  • Skills in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel
  • Interpersonal skills to resolve conflict and work with other employees, customers, Subscribers and the public
  • Golf competency with a low handicap
  • Knowledge and experience in successfully coordinating tournaments for hotel groups, public play and Subscribers
  • Accounting skills needed for inventory control

Minimum Qualifications

Ten years of experience as a Class A PGA Golf Professional or LPGA Teaching and Club Professional

  • Undergraduate degree preferred
  • Additional PGA or LPGA Certifications from ongoing educational programs
  • Instruction experience and experience with launch monitors, video instruction programs and other programs to aid in instruction
  • Advanced computer skills including use of Microsoft Suite, Point of Sale systems and On-Line Tee Time reservation systems
  • Valid Driver’s License

 Compensation and Benefits

The compensation for the Director of Golf position will be based on experience.  A complete benefit package will be included and housing will be provided.

This is a twelve-month position that requires that the Director of Golf be on site for the months of April through November.  They may choose to locate elsewhere during the four winter months, however there may be some limited duties during that time frame that can be accomplished via email and telephone.
